De gemeente Gennep kent een stedenband met San Pedro de Lóvago in Nicaragua. Sinds 1994 geven wij, Stichting GESP, inhoud aan deze samenwerking en - in nauw overleg met het gemeentebestuur – onderhouden wij contacten met de partnerorganisaties in de zusterstad in Nicaragua. Wereldburgerschap en draagvlakversterking voor internationale betrekkingen en verhoudingen zijn uitgangspunten; verbinden en samenwerken kernwoorden.
Samen met andere particuliere organisaties en bedrijven ondersteunen we projecten die bijdragen aan de verbetering van de sociale en economische omstandigheden in San Pedro de Lóvago. We richten ons hierbij op drie pijlers: sociale inclusie, basisvoorzieningen en economische ontwikkeling (inkomen genererende projecten en werkgelegenheid). Resultaten en de impact van de projecten (kunnen) elkaar overlappen. Onze inzet daarbij is kennis, kunde en vaardigheden inbrengen en daar waar nodig geven we financiële ondersteuning.
Bijvoorbeeld werken we al jaren in het buitengebied van San Pedro de Lóvago samen met partnerorganisatie Quitulia aan het programma 'alle kinderen naar school'. Vaak kunnen kinderen niet naar school, omdat ze moeten werken om hun familie te helpen die vaak niet genoeg middelen hebben. Soms ook omdat er veel werk is op de boerderij van hun ouders. Kinderen moeten bijvoorbeeld water halen. Soms langer dan 2 uur lopen met een emmer water. Daarom is de aanleg van waterleidingen zo belangrijk. In een kleine gemeenschap is al zo'n zwaartekrachtgedreven waterleiding aangelegd. Het afvalwater uit de keuken wordt weer gebruikt voor de moestuinen rondom huis. Schoon drinkwater, groente en naar school: op weg naar een kansrijkere toekomst.
